In October of 2013, a 12-year old Yorkie arrived at a veterinarian’s office with a broken back. The injuries were extensive and the dog was suffering, so the poor little guy was euthanized. What had happened? The owner explained that during a fight, her husband had forcefully thrown their 4-lb. dog out the door, injuring the dog.
The incident was then reported to Animal Services. Our cruelty investigator, Officer Erika Johnson, interviewed the offender, who confessed but expressed no remorse for what he had done.
It took two years, but earlier this month, the offender was convicted of animal cruelty in the first degree under RCW 16.52.205. He was given a 1-month sentence, and ordered to have no contact with dogs for 12 months–a small victory for the many voiceless victims of animal neglect and cruelty.
Animal Services currently has 9 felony cases and 11 gross misdemeanor cases pending prosecution, with new cases being reported every week. To report animal abuse or neglect, please call us at Animal Services, (360) 352-2510.
